Military to test dirigible

April 15, 2010

The U.S. military are now testing dirigibles in the desert of Utah.  The hope for the testing (which will become a commonplace in the next several years) is to provide greater identification for missiles and other threats to national security.

The recently launched dirigible was nearly 240 feet and spent 3 hours in the air.  However, the newly tested dirigibles will be able to stay in the air for nearly a month.

The military said in an official statement:

“The dirigibles are outfitted with radar and communications systems to provide long-range surveillance targeting threats from aircraft, ballistic and cruise missiles.”

The testing will provide the military with greater awareness of potential threats and overall protect troops and citizens of the U.S.

The testing will take place on Dugway Proving Ground which is located a few hours west of Salt Lake City.
